Websites and Mobile Devices

More than 50% of ALL web browsing on the planet is done on mobile devices now. A year and a half ago, in response to this trend, Google announced:

“There is a multitude of different screen sizes across phones, “phablets”, tablets, desktops, game consoles, TVs, even wearables. Screen sizes will always be changing, so it’s important that your site can adapt to any screen size, today or in the future.”

At the same time, Google changed their algorithm (the formula they use to decide how to rank the pages of your website, which determines how many people will find your site with a search) to heavily favor “Responsive”, mobile friendly sites.

WARNING: If you have an older website, there is a good chance that GOOGLE WILL EVEN WARN PEOPLE AWAY FROM YOUR SITE if they are searching on a cell phone or tablet.

RESPONSIVE WEB SITES
A “Responsive” web site actually detects what device your potential customer is using and literally reshapes itself for optimum viewing on that device. Images get bigger or smaller. Text flows and stays large so it can be read easily. Links remain large so they can be clicked on with a finger instead of a mouse. Three columns next to each other will become one vertical column. No pinching or spreading with your fingers to make the site bigger or smaller.

If your website is not Responsive, you are losing viewers, customers and income. Can you guess where people are going when they get frustrated trying to see your site on a small screen? That’s right… somewhere else!

A LITTLE TEST
1) Open up your site on your computer. Click and drag the edge of your browser to resize it. Does the content change size and layout, or does it disappear off the edge when you make your browser small enough? Disappearing off the edge is bad.
2) Go to your site on a smartphone or tablet. Does it look different than on your computer, or is it just a smaller version you have to pinch and spread to navigate? No pinch and spread is good.

All the experts will tell you that your website is the most important marketing tool you can have. You are investing a great deal of your time and money into your success, so why are you skimping on the single most vital tool at your disposal?
