Digital Marketing Part I

DESIGN VS. MARKETING:

Nowadays most every person and business creating a website knows it’s not enough to just have a great website. Yes, it’s an absolute necessity as a starting place, but you have to get people TO your website.

Spending money on marketing to drive people to an ugly or ineffective website is a waste. Having a credible, memorable website that no one sees doesn’t do a whole lot of good either. It all depends, of course, on what your goals are, but if you want to grow your business or seek success, you need both. It’s not one vs. the other, it’s both.

Almost all of our clients ask us now about marketing their site. Knowing what a great need there is for this service (and how many companies do not do a very good job at it), 21Thirteen Design has recently incorporated a Digital Marketing arm.

So let’s go over a few ideas that will help you understand what all this means, and eventually give you some ideas that will help you figure what’s best suited for you.

DIGITAL MARKETING:

Digital marketing is any means of marketing which is electronic in form and uses the internet and/or mobile devices to market something. Here’s what Wikepedia has to say about it:

“Digital marketing techniques such as search engine optimization (SEO), search engine marketing (SEM), content marketing, influencer marketing, content automation, campaign marketing, data-driven marketing and e-commerce marketing, social media marketing, social media optimization, e-mail direct marketing, display advertising, e–books, and optical disks and games are becoming more common in our advancing technology. In fact, digital marketing now extends to non-Internet channels that provide digital media, such as mobile phones (SMS and MMS), callback, and on-hold mobile ring tones.”

It’s also referred to as Online Marketing, Web Marketing, or Internet Marketing, even though, as mentioned above, it’s grown to include technologies that deliver via cellular networks.

If it’s not printed, if it’s not tangible, and if it’s delivered through an electronic device, it’s Digital Marketing.

TYPES OF DIGITAL MARKETING:

The above list is really a description of different “channels” of digital marketing, not types. In other words, these are different ways of delivering a marketing effort. Our next article will focus on what might be more correctly called “types” of digital marketing. Stay tuned!
